Opportunities

Internships at the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Auditors, the European Ombudsman, the European Investment Bank, the Economic and Social Committee, the Committee of the Regions, the Central European Bank, the various EU Institutions, the Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union (CdT), the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP), the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Eurofound), the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (UAMI), the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA).

European Parliament

The European Parliament organises numerous traineeships and study visits. These include: Robert Schuman scholarships, paid traineeships, aimed at graduates who want to supplement the knowledge acquired through their studies; unpaid traineeships, aimed mainly at young people who have achieved their upper-secondary education diploma or equivalent qualifications (Baccalaureate, A Levels etc) and who are required to complete a traineeship as part of their course of study; paid traineeships for people with a disability, open to both graduates and to people whose qualifications are below university level; paid and unpaid translation traineeships and for conference interpreters.

Council of the European Union

The Council of the European Union offers around 70 traineeships annually for an average period of 5 months. The minimum requirement for applicants is to have completed at least the first cycle of a course of university studies evidenced by a degree certificate, or equivalent qualification. Candidates must be nationals of Member States of the European Union. Traineeships are also available to third, fourth and fifth year students of higher-education establishments or university which requires such a period of training to be undertaken as part of the course of study. Trainee tasks may include attending meetings of working parties, drafting minutes, carrying out preparatory work or research on a particular subject.…

European Commission

The European Commission offers the possibility of traineeships within one of their departments. The principle recipients of this opportunity are young graduates who can spend between three and five months in the Commission. Throughout the course of the year there are two traineeship periods, starting 1 March and 1 October respectively. The experience might be of an administrative or linguistic (translator) nature. The trainees will receive a monthly allowance and, at the end of the traineeship period, a progress certificate.

European Court of Justice

Every year the European Court of Justice offers a limited number of trainee positions which last for a maximum of 5 months. The traineeship periods run from March to July and October to February. Among the candidate requirements are a degree in law or political sciences and, for those who want to go into the interpreting branch, a diploma in conference interpreting. The Court of Justice is situated in Luxembourg and so a good knowledge of French is required.…

Court of Auditors

The European Court of Auditors, with its headquarters in Luxembourg, organises traineeships for graduates and students who have completed at least four semesters of university study in a relevant subject. The maximum duration of the work experience is five months and  applications can be made throughout the year.

The European Ombudsman

The European Ombudsman organises traineeships principally for law graduates. The traineeship is carried out in either the Strasburg or Brussels headquarters depending on office needs. The starting dates are 1 September and 1 January. Candidates must: be nationals of an EU Member State, possess a university diploma in law and be at an advanced stage of professional training, or research, in Community law as well as having knowledge of both French and English.

European Investment Bank

The task of the European Investment Bank, the European Union's financing institution with its headquarters in Luxembourg, is to contribute towards the integration, balanced development and economic and social cohesion of the Member States. The Bank organises internships of up to five months during which time the participants can get to know the institutions goals and its practical operations. Economic and Social Committee

The Economic and Social Committee is an EU consultative body which provides a platform to express opinions on EU issues, those of the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament. Twice a year the Committee organises traineeship periods of up to five months in its headquarters in Brussels. The goal candidates are graduates and university students who will be involved in research and analysis of economic, financial and technical cooperation projects.

Committee of the Regions

The Committee of the Regions works to assure the respect of regional and local identity and rights. Each year, the Committee of the Regions offers the opportunity for young citizens to acquire work experience in their services at the Brussels headquarters. The work experience can be a long-term traineeship or a shorter-term study visit.

European Agencies

The website of the Italian Representation of the European Commission publicises some useful references about the career and internship opportunities available within the various EU agencies. The agencies are public bodies which have technological and scientific duties in set fields. For example, CEDEFOP is the European agency concerned with professional and vocational development, the EEA (European Environmental Agency) is the agency dedicated to the environment, OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is the agency in charge of health and safety in the workplace.

Translation Centre for the Bodies of the European Union (CdT)

Offers linguistic traineeships to graduates of EU Member States and applicants from other states. The aim is the acquisition of linguistic competence specific to the job.

European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP)

Twice a year, Cedefop offers five-month periods of in-service training for young university graduates or public sector employees from the Member States of the European Union and a number of nationals of non-member countries. These training periods involve work experience in one of the departments of Cedefop. They start on 1 March and 1 September each year.

Every year the website launches its trainee selection campaign. The traineeship period lasts for a maximum of five months.

Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Design) (UAMI)

The Office organises traineeships twice a year, lasting five months each, for young university graduates of Member States of the European Union and for a number of nationals from third countries. These traineeships consist of work experience in one of the services of the Office.

The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA)

ENISA offers traineeships for periods of three to five months and aim to provide trainees with work
experience in the field of Network and Information Security.
