The European Health Insurance Card

The European Health Insurance Card is valid in each country and allows the holder to obtain healthcare in any EU Member States in substitution of the E111. Every EU citizen that is suddenly taken ill or has an accident during a temporary visit to any EU country - as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland - can get free or reduced-cost healthcare.

The Italian healthcare system is structured in a way that guarantees direct services to all citizens, i.e. free, granted on the national territory by public and private healthcare providers covered by the national insurance. Healthcare abroad is granted, in duly justified cases and when pre-emptively authorised, only for very highly specialised services that are unavailable in Italy promptly or in an adequate form for the patient’s particular clinical state.…
